For me, it always depended on the collection, whichever one jumped out at me the most as I flicked idly through style.com. This year for S/S '10, that collection was Preen. I wanted every single dress, the pinks, the metallic fabrics that looked like they would crackle if you touched them...then this week I had an epiphany. It was like that moment in Clueless where Alicia Silverstone realises she's in love with her stepbrother Paul Rudd...I LOVE Preen! I love how their designs are sophisticated and clean-looking yet still edgy. They make the best party dresses I've ever seen. I want to wear one on the night bus home.

I would love to be wearing their famous 'Power' bandage dress in New Years Eve this year, preferably with a shrunken leather biker jacket and these Office platforms I um and ahh over everytime I go in the shop. In fact, I really regret the fact that I only went once; it was that good. I really love the way Viktor & Rolf bring art and fashion together in order to make something both surreal and classically beautiful. Alongside projections on the walls of their most famous collections, there was a huge dollhouse structure filled with china dolls dressed in miniature replicas of their creations. I could have easily stood and stared all day.

This brings me nicely to Viktor & Rolf S/S '10, with which they didn't disappoint:

I have a really bad cold and I've spent my weekend watching East-End gangster films, but when I saw these gowns I literally gasped audibly - they appear to defy gravity almost. Allow me to elaborate. Sometime this year, I can't even remember exactly when, I stopped wearing colour. Now, I own plenty of coloured things from Topshop that I've panic bought because I have nothing to wear to the pub that night (the perils of living a five minute walk from said Topshop), but like most temporary fixes in life, they do not make me happy. I will wear them once, realise they are not 'me' (or see someone else in the same thing) and banish them to the depths of my wardrobe, or give them to my sister. I like heather grey, charcoal grey, black, white, navy. It was fine for a couple of months but, frankly, it's all getting a bit dull now. My clothes don't say fun, bubbly girl to strangers, they say drab and miserable.

I've been estranged from the colour spectrum for so long that I've actually forgotten which shades suit me. Similarly, the high street is not on my side this season. Being rather pale, nude pink is not my friend; and it's everywhere. Plus, I can't stand all those crop tops in Topshop with the drapey hemlines, I prefer things that are cut much more classically. After much racking my brains I recall once rather liking rich purple and raspberry, so I think my best bet is to get myself to American Apparel and invest in some basics in those shades that I can still pair with all my black and grey, without resembling a walking rain cloud so much.

Really though I know exactly where my aversion to colour has come from. I have Champagne taste on a Lambrini budget and it's all too easy to look cheap in cheap bright clothes, a darker palette is just so much more luxe looking...but seeing the eclectic colour palette at Louise Gray's SS10 presentation has inspired me to get my act together and start looking a little brighter:

(style.com)

So pretty. However, it can also go wrong, very wrong, especially if you've eaten a lot of bread that day...

I liked the overdyed hair at Proenza Schouler a lot. I haven't blogged in ages, apologies.

So Courtney Love did a surprise performance at the Alexander Wang afterparty last night, and apparantly she was really good...love you C.Love! I can't say I'm so enamoured with the collection though, I don't think I would wear any of it, I liked Rag & Bone better. I do love A.Wang though, I think he's adorable AND he listens to Aaliyah.

So I spent much of my afternoon today drinking tea, perusing style.com and listening to Speech Debelle. She won the Mercury Music prize this week and I'm quite impressed with her unique, girlie raps. My favourite show so far is probably Preen, amazing, amazing dresses...

The first pink one is my hands down absolute favourite, the colour is just exquisite. I was really excited about this, since for some reason I never got round to purchasing the first one with Beth Ditto until it was too late and the man in R.D Franks told me it was totally sold out across London (does anyone know if I can still get it anywhere? Maybe online?)

Anyway, I made sure I bought a copy of No.2 because my ex-boyfriend's best friend is one of the amateur boxers in the editorial 'Boxer Beat' and I was curious to see how the pictures turned out. In my opinion it's actually the best feature in the whole magazine, I really like the concept; if you've seen it you might agree with me.

So the theme of the issue is 'Young Blood', and everybody featured is under 21. As much as I was anticipating this, I can't help but feel slightly underwhelmed with the content. I think that when I was 14 or 15 I would have adored this, but since I've never seen Twilight or listened to a Jonas Brothers song, I didn't really 'get' the point in showcasing a bunch of stars who are overexposed enough in mainstream media already. This issue is all about new emerging talent which I think is great, but I can't help but feel these young athletes and musicians (yes, even you Chipmunk!) are kind of oddly juxtaposed with others who are famous simply for who their parents are, mentioning no names...

Ok, I think my real issue is with Coco Sumner saying she doesn't wash her hair. Really, when did a lack of personal hygiene suddenly become cool?

25/08/09 - Bah Humbug

This is my probably my favourite song off the new Arctic Monkeys album. In actual fact, my favourite magazine in the world is Vogue Paris but I feel really guilty buying it for nearly a fiver in R.D Franks and so save it as a treat if I go to France, along with real pain du chocolat and a bar of Milka chocolate. Anyway, this time coming home I purchased a copy of August's Vogue Italia. I immediately fell in love with the editorial of Georgia May Jagger by Tim Walker.

larissabelkis.files.wordpress.com

These weren't my favourite photos but they were the two I could find. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda. My friend regaled me with this particular anecdote and it's my favourite.

'They returned to the United States, first to Montgomery, and then to Hollywood, where Fitzgerald was invited to work on a screenplay. Here he met a beautiful young actress, Lois Moran, whom he admired (she was the basis for the character, Rosemary Hoyt, in his new novel, Tender is the Night). Jealous of his attentions to Lois, Zelda collected jewelry from guests at a party and threw them into a pot of boiling water - to make soup. She also threw all of the clothes she had brought with her for the trip into the bathtub and set fire to them. When they left California, she threw a platinum wristwatch that Scott had given her years ago out of the window of the train, so angry was she over his admiration for Lois Moran'.

adorevintage

Clara Bow. I spent the past week living in an apartment at the top of a Palazzo, feeling like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. I visited Pisa on a cloudy day and admired the sheer ridiculousness of the Leaning Tower, how on earth, after 800 years, is it still standing? It's crazy! I've also been to Lucca and Florence. Lucca was amazing, really beautiful. It's a small, walled city so we rented bicycles and wrote around the City wall and stopped for chocloate hazelnut gelato. I wasn't quite so taken with Florence, I'd heard it was spectacular but it was so touristy and I hate tourists/ being a tourist. You have something really historic like Dante's Church or Michaelangelo's Il David juxtaposed with one of those stands that sells waffles covered in Nutella or tacky sunglasses.

I've finally found some decent wireless, so it's quite nice to catch up with the outside world/ my favourite blogs when I fancy a little siesta. The Satorialist was in Florence the same time as I was but I didn't see him about!

The Satorialist

This isn't from Florence, it's from Paris but I had to post it because I adore the Catcher in the Rye t-shirt! I'd love one myself, or perhaps just this gorgeous male model so he could lend me his...

Aside from sight-seeing I've just been spending my time eating amazing food - everything is so good here, even what you buy in the supermarket...I can't seem to get enough mozzarella and tomatoes; and reading lots of books. So far I've finished Tender Is The Night and Huruki Murakami's Norweigian Wood (which is kind of like a sicker Japanese version of The Catcher in the Rye, funnily enough.) I just started Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. I learnt Italian in my last two years at school so I speak it a little bit. So far I've spoken to the lady in the dry cleaners and the butcher...

Ciao!

Arrivederci!

flickr

I'm off to Italy for two weeks tomorrow, I can't wait! I had an amazing weekend at Lovebox Weekender and then spent a couple of days in Ireland with family. It was nice and relaxing but I did start to miss a bit of concrete after a while, ok after a few hours! Who remembers that SATC episode where Carrie goes to Aidan's holiday home upstate? I rest my case.

Anyway. reading Grazia on the plane over I chanced upon their coverage of the opening party of the Serpentine gallery's summer exhibition. This would've been far less interesting if it hadn't have also provided a sneak peek at Topshop's A/W '09 collection, since they'd sent some of the gorgeous guests gorgeous pieces to preview. I'm absolutely in love with this embellished, sequinned dress socialite/model Poppy Delevigne is wearing:

thefashionspot

I have to have this when it goes onsale, with ankle boots it would be amazing!

Courtney

twitter
I do enjoy reading Courtney Love's barely legible tweets about skincare and whatnot.

Yesterday my friend and I went to do some thrifting on Brick Lane. I'm using the term thrifting extremely loosely because East-end vintage prices are getting a bit ridiculous, I think sometimes people forget that it really is just old clothes. I do want to try and start going to car boot sales and rummaging in charity shops a bit more but it's mostly a nice idea in theory, since all the good stuff in the London area gets snapped up by the vintage sellers. Vicious circle. We decided to stop for lunch in a kind of pop-up Pizzeria in the Truman Brewery we'd never eaten in before. One glance at the menu revealed that a pizza in this place cost £12. I went to Iceland's capital in April and it is quite honestly one of my favourite cities I have ever visited. It's tiny, it has a lagoon, geysirs and Skyr, the best yoghurt I have ever eaten. Ever.

It is also a goldmine for vintage shopping. I bought a vintage faux fur leopard print coat for about £45 and it pains me that it has yet to be cold enough to wear it at home in England. Oh, and a nice little Reykjavik english-language newspaper, The Reykjavik Grapevine, was where I first read about one of my favourite bands, Wavves! Definately my kind of place.

Oh that was so real

knightcat

Cheeky! I've been coveting one of those men's YSL logo t-shirts for an age now but seeing this from The Selby makes me want to whip out the fabric pens and have a go myself.

I know it's July but ever since Topshop announced their A/W '09 collaboration with Christopher Kane I've been ridiculously excited about planning my upcoming winter wardrobe. I already love (and own many) plaid shirts, cardigans, thick knit tights and bobble hats in various shades of black, navy, charcoal and grey - I just really need a pair of clunky boots to add to my (colourless) menagerie.

You might remember a few posts back that it was love at first sight between myself and Topshop's Agnes lace up boot? Well, Agnes may have some competition because I can't stop thinking about Aaliyah since the new lines were added to the site this morning...

As lovely as these beauties are, and as much as they share a name with my most beloved R&B diva (Beyonce who? R.I.P) the peep toe and the crazy heel make them kind of impractical for everyday in the gloomy British weather. I can see fashion bloggers going gaga for them though.

Actually, my eye has been wandering even further into pastures anew. I've never thought of myself as a River Island girl but check out these babies:

They also come in brown. I think they're fantastic and at £64.99 they're about a hundred quid cheaper than the extremely similar All Saints military boots. I'm actually really torn between purchasing these or a pair of traditional, black patent Doc Marten's. I've heard the process of breaking in DM's is a nightmare though. Any thoughts?

Funday

This is my best friend. I was in absolute awe of the way the big, old doors on the high street open out on to the most breathtaking, meticulously tended courtyards with the most perfect-looking grass I have ever laid eyes on (you can't walk on the grass, but you CAN play croquet - how great is that?). One college even has its own Deer Park! As much as I love my home, it was so nice to get away from London for a few days - it really did feel like a holiday, particuarly with the scorching weather we're currently having and all.

I'm definately starting to feel like I'm wilting in the heat now. Tomorrow night I'm seeing Jamie T open the itunes Festival and I'm predicting an even hotter, sweatier gig than usual. I've been living in gladiator sandals at the moment, but I know I shouldn't wear them if I want to come home feet intact...so if anybody has any ideas on appropriate (and stylish) summer gig footwear, hit. me. up.

Speaking of shoes, I can't stop staring at Topshop's Agnes lace up boot everytime I go on the website:

I actually almost prefer these to the Emma Cook for Topshop brothel creeper boots the Fashion world went gaga over, mostly because they're less heavy and way cheaper at £75! So lovely, but so hideously inappropriate for summer! So, on a short trip to AA I bought the Tri-Blend grey cropped T-shirt (Which I've been meaning to do for months), the pocket skirt in navy (which I already own in Orchid and Asphalt, oops) and the Ruched polka-dot body (Which is just love really). I'm so excited about the last one, I almost wish it was made in swimming costume material so I could wear it on holiday with my big, floppy Bianca Jagger straw hat (TK Maxx, £6.99, holla!)
I also really wanted to get my hands on this Urban Outfitters skirt, but sadly they didn't have my size, oh and I've found the perfect shade of bright pink-coral nail varnish! I'm really intrigued by Azzedine Alaïa at the moment. The bandage dresses, bodies, crop tops...what I would do to stumble across an orginal Alaïa body-con dress in a charity shop!

Until fairly recently I've been rather sceptical of the body con dress. This partly due to several mishaps in shop changing rooms, most notably an incident with a strapless peach bandage number in H&M that really did make me look like I was wearing well, a big plaster, and all the scary looking girls I see in clubs who team theirs with equally scary heels and a mean expression. A few months ago my friend and I were flicking through a copy of Grazia whilst in the queue in Co-Op Stepney and happened across a double spread of Alexa Chung modelling her picks from New Look's Summer collection. Among them was the most perfect slinky body con number (at New Look!), black, banded, cap sleeved, short but not too short. I finally tracked it down on their website a few weeks ago and I adore it. It looks just as good on its own as it does with a leather jacket/ sequinned cape slung over the top.

Monday Madness

topshop blog

I so wish I'd ordered the Barbara Hulanicki Topshop dress now. There's far too much knee-length polyester going down Brick Lane for my liking. I've never seen them before and was slightly dubious because I wasn't such a fan of their newer stuff, but they were fantastic and so full of energy - I drank Becks from plastic cups and danced my face off. Of course it helps that Caleb is so handsome and full of Southern charm...my only qualm is that they played The 02 arena which is definately my least favourite venue in Town. I would love to see them play somewhere more intimate like Brixton Academy but I guess they're too 'big' for that now? I may have grown up slightly now, but my love for shiny things is ever enduring. I adore this outfit I saw a while ago on Garance Dore - the combination of twinkly silver sequins and earthy tones is heavenly. This afternoon in Topshop I miraculously found the last silver sequinnned Kate Moss cardigan, in my size, hanging in front of a rack of jeans. Therefore, I was more than happy to learn that the upcoming July issue sees none other than Winona Ryder grace its cover. I love Noni! In fact I can't decide what I love more, Heathers or the fact Johnny Depp had his 'Winona Forever' tattoo (which Elle used as the tagline - eeep!) changed to 'Wino Forever' after they broke up...

I just love it!
